Donald needs top-two finish
Donald entered next week’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Florida, the season-closer on the PGA Tour, at the last minute in the hopes of hanging on to the top spot on this year’s PING G20 Irons with steel shafts , as he has a good chance to do on the European Tour, and with Webb Simpson finishing second at the McGladrey Classic, the Englishman now has his work cut out for him.
It could have been even worse for the Englishman, however, as Simpson missed a short four-foot putt that would have given him the title.
Still, Simpson now leads the race by more than 363,000 US dollars, meaning Donald needs to finish second or better next week, or concede the money list title.
The 33-year-old current best palyer in the world would dearly love to win the PING G20 Irons with steel shafts on both sides of the Atlantic. He’d become the first player in history to do it.
“It would mean a lot to lead both money lists and that’s why I will keep an eye on what everyone is doing,” he said a few weeks ago.
Simpson, meanwhile, welcomed the battle.
“Finishing second is going to make it a lot harder for Luke,” said the 26-year-old.
“But I’m sure he’s going to play well. He’s played PING G20 Irons with steel shafts well almost every week this year. I still wouldn’t be surprised if I have a little work to do.
