Is editing photos cheating photography?

I have a Nikon Coolpix P90, and I recently started taking photos and realized that I really love photography. I adjust the brightness and contrast of my photos to improve the quality.

Is it cheating to adjust the color, focus, and using other editing tools to make the photos look better? I sort of think that editing my photos will make them lose their originality and make me feel fake. Do real photographers edit their photos?

OK – You asked for it – climbs on soapbox – Photo editing has been done from the birth of photography. I’m all in favour of getting it right in camera as that increases the possibilities, but the bottom line is ALL pictures are edited, even film guys edit where they point their camera they don’t photograph everything they are selective – that’s editing, they edit colour, they use Unsharp Mask to sharpen, at least the good ones do, they cross process, they use a high contrast or low contrast paper and/or developer, they Dodge and Burn – all editing choices, all this ‘I use film therefore I’m a better photographer than you’ – what a load of twaddle (cleaned up this last expletive). The artist will omit a distracting telegraph pole from his painting, what’s the difference if you clone it out in Photoshop?

You can be creative, for a lot of people the photograph is the start of the imaging process not an end in itself. You can have the original colour version or a B&W version everything from the high key ‘light and airy’ to downright Gothic, you can have a posterised or solarised version and that’s just for the film guys, with digital you can do loads more. You can make a watercolour, pastel, acrylic or oil versions of your picture, you can combine it with other pictures into a scrapbook page, you can add texture, the list is endless and time consuming to learn. The actual photography is the easy bit, the hard work for some starts when they upload them onto the computer, to master Photoshop takes longer than mastering a camera.

HDR you either love ‘em or hate ‘em, but either way they demand good camera technique (bracketing) as well as good software manipulation. These were edited mainly in Phtotomatix Pro.

What’s not generally realised is Photoshop was originally a painting program, the photo manipulation came later when somebody had the brilliant idea of using a photograph as a start image.
